Incredible and intriguing antique, late 19th century/early 20th century (c1898-1910), original oil painting depicting what we’ve discerned to be the end of a battle during the Spanish American War, presumably on the coastline of Havana, Cuba. This impressive, primitive wartime painting shows two lifeless soldiers lying in uniform on the beach. One soldier lays by his rifle and the other by his lifeless horse. The focal point of the scene is one lone standing horse next to a dilapidated chariot or wagon. The scene takes place on a sandy beach with rocky coastline with a seascape of cresting wakes disappearing into the horizon. A blue sky can be seen above. After further research the uniforms of navy blue with red cuffs appear to be that of the US horse riding marines involved in the battles on the shores of Cuba at the end of the 19th century. Medium is oil on canvas done in a primitive folk art style, likely painted by a soldier or someone who had witness the horrific battle first hand. We were unable to note a signature. The provenance of this painting comes from a Easton, Maryland area estate which we purchased on our recent picking trip in the South. The condition is Good with no holes, rips, tears or indents. There is some noticeable toning to the painting. The painting color contrast resembles that most of photo 1 in person. Also we have noted that the piece appears to have been relined at one point long ago by a previous owner, with a thin silver sheet being present underneath the canvas (see photos 21, 23 and 24). As if the frame is original we are unsure, but the etched gold gilded wood frame does compliment the piece nicely and dated no later than the 1920s. The painting does have modern picture wire, eye hooks and brackets in place in order to ensure that it sits still within the frame. We are quite confident this is a battle in Cuba during the Spanish American War but may warrant further research. Regardless, quite an incredible late 19th century battle scene containing elements of soldiers, guns, horses and a seascape all in one!
